Some pieces of jewellery are designed to mark a milestone, and others become treasured because of the story behind how they were made. This pearl necklace was created as a one-of-a-kind gift for my auntie's 80th birthday – a celebration of a remarkable life and a piece intended to be worn and cherished for years to come.
The necklace combines a strand of beautifully organic freshwater pearls with a striking baroque pearl pendant. Rather than choosing perfectly matched pearls, I selected naturally formed pearls that celebrate individuality. Their subtle variations in shape and lustre give the necklace warmth and character, while the large baroque pearl becomes the natural focal point, reflecting light with soft iridescent tones of ivory, cream and silver.
What makes this piece truly unique is the handcrafted freeform T-bar clasp, which sits proudly at the front of the necklace as part of the design rather than being hidden away at the back.
The circular hoop was formed from fine silver, carefully curled by hand before being placed onto a charcoal block and heated with a torch. As the silver reached temperature, it naturally softened and flowed into an organic, sculptural form. Rather than forcing the metal into a perfect circle, I allowed the heat and the material to influence the final shape, creating a clasp that could never be exactly reproduced.

Once the form had been refined, sterling silver jump rings were individually soldered onto the clasp, providing secure attachment points for both the pearl strand and the baroque pearl drop. The T-bar was then hand-finished to complement the flowing lines of the clasp while remaining practical and comfortable to fasten.

The finished clasp reminds me of crashing waves, sea-worn rock formations and the gentle movement of marine plant life beneath the water. Its flowing, asymmetrical silhouette echoes the natural forms of the pearls themselves, creating harmony between every element of the necklace.
Although technically a fastening, the clasp has become the centrepiece of the design. It celebrates craftsmanship in the same way the pearls celebrate nature—each one beautifully imperfect, impossible to duplicate and entirely individual.
Creating jewellery by hand means every decision leaves its mark on the finished piece. From selecting each pearl to shaping the silver over charcoal and carefully soldering every connection, this necklace tells a story of time, care and craftsmanship. It is a meaningful gift created to celebrate an important birthday, carrying with it not only precious materials but also the love and attention invested in every stage of its making.
I hope it becomes a piece that will be worn on special occasions, passed down through generations, and always remind my aunt of how much she is loved.
