He Wanted Something as Special as Her… But What Do You Make When Nothing Feels Enough?

Designing a Bespoke Necklace with Meaning

Every bespoke jewellery commission begins with a story, but this one started with a particularly thoughtful brief. A boyfriend got in touch looking to commission a handmade silver necklace as a Christmas gift for his girlfriend. He wanted something meaningful and personal—far removed from anything mass-produced or high street.

She loves semi-precious gemstones and has a distinctly boho-inspired style, so the piece needed to feel organic, artistic, and wearable, while still being eye-catching. Above all, it had to celebrate the beauty of handmade jewellery, with visible craftsmanship and subtle imperfections that make a piece truly unique.

Inspiration from Fused Silver Star Studs

During our early conversations, he mentioned being captivated by a pair of fused silver star studs I was making at the time. The appeal was in the surface texture—the delicate sparkle created by tiny silver particles fused directly onto the metal. This technique creates a soft, light-catching finish that feels raw yet refined.

He asked whether that same effect could be incorporated into the necklace design, and it quickly became the defining feature of the piece.

Choosing Semi-Precious Stones for a Lightweight Design

When designing a dainty silver necklace, weight is always a key consideration. Fully set stones can add unnecessary heaviness, so instead I selected faceted tourmaline beads. Tourmaline is a beautiful semi-precious stone known for its wide range of natural colours, which sit perfectly alongside the cool tones of silver.

The faceted beads provide sparkle and movement without overpowering the design, keeping the necklace light, wearable, and versatile.

Handmaking the Silver Components

Each element of the necklace was fabricated by hand at the bench.

The tourmaline beads are suspended on 0.8mm round silver wire, which was carefully filed and shaped using long-nose pliers to achieve soft, organic curves. The straight bar elements began as 3mm round silver bar, which was rolled and stretched, then flattened before being planished to strengthen the metal and refine the surface.

Each bar was then hand-shaped around precisely punched holes using hole punch pliers—an invaluable tool for achieving clean, consistent results across a piece. For best results, the silver must be fully annealed before punching, and sheet thickness should remain no more than approximately 0.71mm to avoid stressing the metal.

Handmade Chain and Secure T-Bar Fastening

The necklace is finished with a handmade silver chain, created from 0.8mm wire, and secured with a hand-fabricated T-bar clasp. To ensure durability and confidence for the wearer, the disc ends of the T-bar were domed before soldering. This small but essential detail helps the fastening hold securely once in place.

It’s these thoughtful construction choices—often unseen—that transform a piece from decorative into something genuinely wearable.

A Unique Handmade Silver Necklace

The finished necklace is unmistakably handmade. It carries the subtle sparkle of fused silver, the natural colour play of tourmaline, and the quiet irregularities that only come from traditional silversmithing techniques.

More than just a Christmas gift, this bespoke necklace tells a story of intention, craftsmanship, and individuality—everything a meaningful jewellery commission should be.
